ABOUT RUFFIN HEALTH

Independent research informed by clinical medicine, epidemiology, executive management, and health care economics.

Ruffin Health, LLC studies how health care companies create—or fail to create—durable wealth for their shareholders.

OUR PURPOSE

Investment research with practical consequences.

Ruffin Health, LLC is an independent health care investment research and advisory firm dedicated to understanding how health care companies create—or destroy—shareholder wealth.

We evaluate publicly traded health care companies through the combined perspectives of clinical medicine, epidemiology, health care economics, financial analysis, and executive management. Our investigations examine financial results, the clinical value of medical technologies, the viability of business models, and the quality of corporate strategy and management decisions.

Our research begins with a fundamental question: Why have some health care companies produced exceptional returns for long-term investors while others have consumed substantial capital without generating competitive returns?

We believe the answers can inform better investment decisions. Our long-term objective is to develop and validate a systematic framework for identifying characteristics associated with future shareholder value creation. That prospective framework is still under development.

We publish independent, evidence-based assessments, including critical evaluations when the evidence warrants them. Our purpose is not to promote the health care industry, but to understand its economics and distinguish durable value creation from the destruction of investor capital.

THE FIRM

Evidence before expectations.

Ruffin Health is an independent investment research firm focused on the economics and financial performance of the health care industry.

Our research asks a straightforward but demanding question: which companies and business models have generated competitive returns for shareholders, and what explains the differences?

The firm's principal initiative, The Health Care Value Creation Framework, examines historical shareholder returns alongside operating performance, capital allocation, debt, and dilution. Its longer-term objective is to develop and rigorously test a prospective approach to assessing future value creation.

Ruffin Health distinguishes evidence from hypothesis, and financial value creation from clinical benefit. Both matter, but they are not interchangeable.

RESEARCH DIRECTOR

Marshall Ruffin, MD, MPH, MBA

Dr. Ruffin's career spans clinical medicine, health system executive leadership, health care information technology, and applied research. His experience includes leading major technology initiatives within complex health systems and founding a company that developed predictive models for pregnancy complications.

He is the author of Digital Doctors (1999) and has authored or coauthored more than 50 peer-reviewed publications. His background in epidemiology and health economics informs an investment research approach grounded in measurement, comparison, and explicit assumptions.

Epidemiological reasoning is integral to his research. Questions about disease incidence and prevalence, the benefits and complications of treatment, and the sensitivity, specificity, and predictive values of diagnostic tests help establish the clinical and economic context in which health care businesses operate.

His current work centers on the financial outcomes of publicly traded health care companies, with particular attention to whether promising innovations and new business models have produced competitive returns for their investors.

“A valuable health care innovation is not necessarily a valuable investment. The financial evidence must answer that question.”
